Graduation Requirements

Industrial Engineering Graduation Requirements

Grade Point Average

  • A minimum of 3.10 in IE courses and 3.00 overall.
  • GPA is calculated only for the courses taken at WVU.
  • Any student who drops below the average requirements will be placed on probation.
  • Any student who stays on probation for two successive semesters will be suspended from the program.
  • No student can graduate unless he/she satisfies the GPA requirements specified above.

Course and Research

  • Students must satisfy the prerequisites for their program. Prerequisite deficiencies are usually made up by taking the necessary courses. However, certain prerequisite courses can be taken by examination. (Prerequisites for each of the specialization areas are shown in Exhibit II.)
  • Required courses for the MSIE and the MSE degrees are determined by the students area of emphasis.
  • Each area of specialization has a list of recommended electives. Other electives can be taken as approved by the committee.
  • Required courses, research requirements and recommended electives for each of the specialization areas are shown in Exhibit II.
  • No more than 40 percent of the courses are permitted below the 500 level.
  • All full-time students must enroll in, and attend all seminars in all semesters. Missing more than one seminar without approval in any one semester will constitute a failure.
  • Each master's student must prepare, early in his/her program, a plan of study that contains either a minimum of 30 semester credit hours, including a thesis of 6 hours of research credit or 36 credit hours, including a problem report of no more than 3 hours or research credit.
  • The thesis or problem report must conform with the general requirements of the University and with the written requirements of the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering. Moreover, the thesis defense should be announced to the IE faculty.

Industrial Hygiene Graduation Requirements

Master of science degree students are required to take a set of core courses that will total a minimum of 36 semester hours, including credits for a thesis or a problem report. Many students take more than 36-semester hours before graduating, depending on their previous experience and background. A grade-point average of at least 3.0 is required to graduate.

The writing requirement, an integral part of the Master's degree program, can be satisfied in one of two ways:

  • A 3-credit hour problem report based on research completed by the students.
  • A 6-credit hour thesis.

Occupational Safety and Health Graduation Requirements

The PhD in occupational safety and health is designed to provide the appropriate skills to students who have already completed a MS degree from an ABET, Inc./RAC accredited program in industrial hygiene or safety. Each student must satisfy the University- and Statler College-related PhD program requirements. In addition, the students must satisfy the following IMSE program requirements:

Curriculum

  • Normally, a minimum of 30 hours of course work (excluding research, directed studies, etc.) will be required after the master's degree.
  • A minimum of 21 coursework hours must be completed in the IMSE Department.
  • At least one, 9-hour area of concentration of approved course work must be taken out of the IMSE Department. The area of concentration course work must be related to OSH but it cannot include required coursework. Students focusing in ergonomics or industrial hygiene are encouraged to have two areas of concentrations in order to remain competitive with graduates of other institutions.
  • The dissertation committee will specify PhD coursework requirements past those required for the qualifying examination.

Grade Point Average

  • A minimum of 3.50 in IMSE, IH and SAFM courses and 3.30 overall.
  • GPA is calculated only for the courses taken at WVU.
  • Any student who drops below the above requirements will be put on probation.
  • Any student who stays on academic probation for two successive semesters will be dismissed from the program.
  • No student can graduate unless he satisfies the GPA requirements specified above.

Research

  • A minimum of 24 hours of research is required after the master's graduate degree (a maximum of 12 hours per semester).
  • A minimum of 3 hours of research every semester after course completion if a student is in residence and using WVU facilities.
  • Successful completion of the qualifying examination.
  • Successful completion of the candidacy examination.
  • An approved dissertation.

Safety Management Graduation Requirements

Students must successfully complete one of the following tracks:

  • 36 hours of coursework and a comprehensive exam at completion of coursework (including 25 hours of required courses - 8 courses)
  • 33 hours of coursework, and an approved problem report
  • 30 hours of coursework and an approved thesis
  • Students without significant work experience in the safety, health or environmental area are required to complete an internship.

NOTE: Students must have a graduate GPA of 3.0 in order to graduate
